They say, "...plant a seed, grow a tree. Plant a root, grow a family"

"It all started..."

Dona Vasinta Salvadore and Don Delgado, both descendents of wealthy Spanish families residing in the Philippines, met during the Spanish-Filipino peace treaty, after years of bloodshed.

When the Spanish-American war broke out, where the main battleground in this onslaught was Manila, and after years of enduring the suffering of war, and seeing hundreds-of-thousands defenseless civilians laying dead and dying caught between the crossfires - both Dona Vasinta Salvadore and husband Don Delgado decided to flee from the Philippines.

They ended up in British Colonial Singapore. There they lived in peace and decided to have a family.

Clara Salvadore was their first child, then came Celestina Salvadore, and the last of their offspring - and first heir -was Pablo Salvadore.

After the death of Don Delgado, and with the signing of the treaty of Paris in 1898 which ended the Spanish-American war in the Philippines, Dona Vasinta Salvadore brought her three children back to the Philippines.

Unbenounced to her and to the Filipino representative in Paris, there was nothing to go back to for the Americans main intention in signing the treaty was to serve their own economic gains.

This cause tempers to rise back in US-occupied Manila, and the Filipino revolutionaries were openly defying the Americans, and the Americans were antagonizing the Filipinos.

Therefore, any dreams of impending Filipino independence were shattered in 1899 when Malonos, the makeshift capital of President Aguinaldo's Philippine Republic was captured by American troops - led by General Arthur MacArthur.

This time, being the Matriarch of the family, Dona Vasinta Salvadore migrated with her three children, in 1907 to Elopura the Capital of North Borneo - now known as Sandakan - which was part of the Philippines area of influence during that period.

Dona Vasinta Salvadore then got remarried to Don Gonzales - they had one daughter together - they named her Prudence.

And the rest, as we say, is history.

Family Tree: Clara Salvadore's Line

Generation I :

Dona Clara Salvadore & Don Ambrosio Vincente de Villalobos

Clara Salvadore, the first daughter of Don Delgado and Dona Vasinta Salvadore, was born in 1900 in Singapore.

There she met the charming Don Ambrosio Vincente de Villalobos, also a Spanish-Filipino descendent, whose family had sent him to Borneo during the upheaval of the Spanish-American war to keep him safe due to his father's strong influence in the war.

Clara Salvadore and Don Ambrosio fell in love and got married in 1916.

They had seven children and while giving birth to their last child, Clara died of complications.

The year was 1936, Clara was just 36 when she past away.

Don Ambrosio Vincente de Villalobos now has the responsibility in taking care of his children by himself.

Don Ambrosio lived a simple live when he retired. He passed away at the age of 99, just a few months shy of a hundred.

Tasiana Villalobos was first married to Alex Azcona who was be-headed by the Japanese during the Japanese occupation in North Borneo. He was one of Peter Raymond Lai's friend and fellow crusader - unfortunately, he was caught with a uniform on and a gun - They had a son together and named him Ricardo Azcona.

Tasiana married to Gonzales Bazan, a Kadazan descendent, who was a part time musician at the Sandakan Recreational Club, after the war.

Gabriella Remedia Villalobos [& Peter Raymond Lai (Deceased)]:

My gemma, Gabriella Remedia Villalobos, met the love of her life while studying at St. Mary's Secondary School in Sandakan, Sabah.

My gempa, Peter Raymond Lai, was born July 1, 1925 to Augustine Lai and Magdalena Yap. He was the man who managed to capture the heart of Don Ambrosio Vincente de Villalobos and Dona Clara Salvadore's fourth daughter, the feisty beauty Gabriella.

But their love was one that had many trials and tribulation, for both sides of their families were completely against their union due to their different culture and race which in those days was a big deal.

Then in 1941, WWII broke-out and when Borneo fell under the Japanese occupation, many of its people were tortured, raped, killed and be-headed. The young women, mostly unmarried were taken against their will to become concubines and sex slaves to the Japanese servicemen serving in South East Asia.

Fearing for his daughters, Don Ambrosio decided that the only way to keep his daughters safe, was to let them marry the men that they love and who loved them back. (Gabriella was not the only daughter of Don Ambrosio who got married to a Chinese man)

Gabriella and Peter Finally got married in 1942. Soon after, they had their first child and named him Bryan Paul.

Before the war broke-out, rumors of it had reached Peter's superior where he worked as a dresser at the Sandakan Civil Hospital.

Dr. Taylor managed to confide with Peter before his capture and entrusted him with the safe-keeping of the hospital's medical supplies and help those who needed medical treatment. (They were supplying the "Z" Force with medical help. The "Z" Force was made up of British and Australian Servicemen with the underground force fighting the occupation) Peter bravely took the task entrusted to him without any questions. He kept this valuable information and dangerous task between himself and a handful of his most trusted friends. (who would betray him later)

After months of watching the horror and suffering of the British, Australian and local people, they now had the means of helping them. So the small group who had been entrusted with the hiding and smuggling of medical supplies by Dr. Taylor began their crusade in helping the wounded allies and the "Z" Forces.

Peter Kept this secret well, he even kept it from his wife, Gabriella, who was already suspicious of her husband's change of routine and behavior but she kept it to herself.

Until one fateful day, Japanese soldiers barged into Peter's place of work, tortured him before capturing and throwing him into a small cell in the ground along with other POWs.

When Gabriella, who was a temp nurse at a make-shift hospital, caught wind of her husband's arrest she was in a state-of-panic. Then when she learn that the Japanese had also taken their only son, Bryan Paul, thinking he was a Caucasian baby (due to his light brown hair), she ran to her father Don Ambrosio for help.

Don Ambrosio was an influential man and had many high society and important friends, including an interpreter to the Japanese Civil Administrator, who had been a trader before the war, Mr. Simuda.

Using his influence, Mr. Simuda managed to locate Bryan Paul and reunite him with Gabriella.

Unfortunately, he could not do anything for Peter, who was now a POW. To stay alive, Peter survived on live rats, bugs and geckos. He was later posted to Sarawak where alongside other detainees, they were commissioned to repair the airstrip - which was constantly bombarded by the American Air Force until the end of WWII.

Finally America dropped the Atom bomb on Hiroshima in 1945, ending the war, where the Japanese surrendered and the POWs were released by the Australian Army.

Gabriella, Peter and Bryan Paul were finally reunited after years of separation and suffering the brutality of the war.

Peter went back to his job as a Medical Officer and was awarded the "Kings Medal" by the Australian and British Commonwealth Nation, handed to him by the Governor of North Borneo in 1947.

Gabriella and Peter had five more children after Bryan Paul. Three boys; Daniel, Raphael and Ambrose - and two girls; my mom, Cabrini and Gloria.

My gempa, Peter Raymond Lai, passed away peacefully at 17:30, March 27, 2001. My gemma had just celebrated her 82nd birthday recently.

Bryan Paul was born in June 29 - he met the love of his life, Lilian when they were both studying at the same college. Lilian was a new student, so Bryan Paul took the advantage of showing her around.

After a while sparks started to fly and one night on a special college trip, Bryan Paul went out fishing and caught himself a "live" one (Lilian).

Known to her family and friends as Acer - Ace graduated with a degree in Public Relation and Filmmaking from the Northern Michigan University, and Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, New York, USA.

She is an International News Correspondent to the International Red Crescent Society, where she covered the historical Asian Tsunami of December 26, 2004. (in Banda Aceh, Maldives, Colombo, Sri Lanka, etc.,.)

Ace is also a filmmaker and photographer.

Dru graduated cum laude in Electronic Engineering from Devry Institute of Technology, Chicago, Illinois - and is now a pilot for Singapore Airlines (SIA) where he is a citizen of.

He is married to Wendy Huang, Japanese-Taiwanese, at Disneyworld, Orlando, Florida, USA - On Friday 13, Jan 2006.

They met while Wendy was studying in Australia and Dru was still a Second Officer. Now, they are both blessed with their first born daughter, ARWEN HUANG-ANDERSON, who was born in Taiwan on June 6, 2006. Dru flies the Ferrari of the skies (A380) as First Officer.
